Tapping her briefcase with her belongings inside, Amaroo watched the object turn into a small leaf. She put the leaf into her old satchel that had the strap removed so the bag was sewn onto her belt. She picked up the first toy she ever made, a home-made brown kangaroo toy with black button eyes, and tucked it behind her belt. With that, she set off.

“...so, mom n’ dad,” Amaroo thought to herself, staring up at the sky, “they’re sendin’ me to Mapleville, huh?”

She stopped and couldn’t help but look back at the tent her mom had set up. Her family was asleep inside. Not wanting to make the goodbye with her family longer than it needed to be, Amaroo took out a small yellow leaf from her satchel, which turned into an old map. After she looked over the map and found a small town near her location, Amaroo glanced over at the note in a bottle she had left her family to read. The note was a heartfelt goodbye note, since she felt too uncomfortable to say goodbye face-to-face with her family.

“...Okay, hop-a-long,” Amaroo murmured to herself, her eyes darting from the nearest town on the map to her location and back again, “According to the map, this should be Mapleville...it’s farther than I thought...”

Amaroo rolled the map up and put it back into her satchel, turning to face the direction of the nearest town. “I’d better get hoppin’ along, hop-a-long.”

And so she set off, prepared as she could be. She felt terrible leaving her family behind and just vanishing, but it’s what her parents wanted for her. They wanted her to get out and live on her own for a while. The reason was understandable...
Amaroo started tearing up a little, but held it back. It wouldn’t do any good to get upset over it now; she finally got a chance to live her own life! She was going to be just fine. She was going to have lots of fun at Mapleville, she just knew it.

Amaroo had left her family about an hour ago, following the rugged stone path she had followed since she left her family’s tent when she finally found a train station, and beyond that, a town! The town just had to be Mapleville; her final destination! However, the town was a good quarter-hour away if she traveled at around 13 miles per hour. She had been hopping as fast as her legs would carry her for a good three-fourths of a mile, with many breaks in-between. Now she was flat-out exhausted. The sun had caught up with her by this time.

“M-Mapleville...there it is...” Amaroo panted, coming to a halt. She took out her map and looked it over. She was right there; just outside of town. She had reached her destination! Yet it was still far off.
Putting her map away, she took the time to catch her breath, and in that time noticed the vastly changed scenery that now surrounded her. Instead of the simple plains, which were now about a mile away where her family is, a fresh green forest surrounded Amaroo. Brown trees with tan rings and emerald green leaves were scattered all around, and a few various summer flowers blossomed in the sunlight. The rocky path Amaroo had been following had turned into smooth cobblestone. She was on a street that taxis and other cars would probably take to Mapleville.

The air felt pleasantly cool on Amaroo’s face. She closed her eyes and took in the sensations. She remembered the first time she felt such nice air on her face; on one of her travels with her family, they were exploring a forest...
Amaroo opened her eyes. The memory burned images into her mind. Her big sister’s face, laughing as she teased, “Lil’ A! Lil’ A!” Her mother pointing out purple pansies and smiling and saying, “They’re so beautiful; just like you, Amaroo.” Her father making a slingshot out of a forked stick and a rubber band and giving it to Amaroo, saying, “I made this for you.”
Amaroo started tearing up. This time she couldn’t hold it back. Afraid of being seen crying by someone, although that was unlikely, Amaroo went over to a nearby tree, sat down, and started wiping away her tears. She snivelled and tried to keep quiet. She took her little kangaroo toy out of her belt and placed it on the ground in front of her.

“H-Hoppy...” Amaroo squeaked at the little kangaroo plush, her shoulders shaking, “W-w-why won’t they just ac-accept my choice to not have a j-joey..? Why can’t I ju-just have you..?” Her voice kept cracking and she just made herself more upset.

The toy, nicknamed ‘Hoppy,’ simply sat there lifelessly, it’s long brown ears drooping over it’s face. Amaroo knew that Hoppy couldn’t reply even if it wanted to.

“...It’s--it’s poinless to--to ask Hoppy,” Amaroo told herself, wiping her tears away with her paws and making herself calm down a bit. “s-since he can’t d-d-do anything about it anyway...a-and it’s point--and it’s pointless to cry about everything now; I-I’m so close to Mapleville...”

Amaroo snivelled again and shook her head. She took a deep breath and released a sigh. After a moment of regaining herself, she stood up, plucked up Hoppy, and turned towards Mapleville. Amaroo tucked Hoppy snugly behind her belt, put on a brave face, and continued on her journey to Mapleville.

Amaroo decided from that moment on to prove her parents wrong for not accepting her descision to not have a joey. She would make many friends and be perfectly fine without a joey, she was sure of it. She wouldn’t let her mind second-guess her determination. Besides, what’s decided is final. She can’t just go back to her family, that would be pointless to what she’s trying to prove to them. However, living on her own when she’s been somewhat dependant on others is going to take some adaptability, though...but that’s the point of adventures, isn’t it? To experience it and to learn and grow from it?

Amaroo grew more and more giddy at the positive reinforcement she gave herself. She was going to make a lot of friends and prove her point to her parents; and she was going to have a blast doing so! Amaroo started bounding away towards Mapleville, her new home! Now was her time to learn all new things, make many new friends, and most importantly, to live on her own for the first time in her life!

~

Finally arriving on the borderline of Mapleville, Amaroo, rather tired after her burst of energy, stopped and gazed restlessly over the town. It was beautiful; the ocean could be seen in the distance a few acres ahead, there were various houses and buildings scattered here and there...and the scenery itself! Trees, trees, flowers and more trees! Summer cicadas sang, honeybees buzzed around clusters of flowers, grasshoppers bounded from grass patch to grass patch...it was a lovely town!

“This...is Mapleville, huh..?” Amaroo hesitantly took her first steps into town, looking around in wonder. She smiled a small smile, which slowly grew into a huge grin. She exclaimed happily, bouncing up and down, “It’s so pretty, hop-a-long! I love it already~ Yay! Mapleville is awesome~”

Now begins Amaroo’s real adventure!

~Welcome to Mapleville!~
Because I have too little time to start fooling around with my new drawing/paint program, I'm going to have to resort to written works for a while.
