Chapter 1
Failed Geometry?! Summer School

"DING! DING! DING!" the loud screech of the announcements bell echoed in the classroom. The tallest girl in the classroom, 182.9 centimeters (six feet) tall, cringed slightly, having the seat closest to the speakers in the classroom.
The shortest boy in the classroom, 152.4 centimeters (five feet) tall, cracked a silent grin, trying not to be obvious. He thought it was hilarious when the behemoth was in any sort of pain. He sat in the same vertical row as the tallest girl, in the very front. He was glancing at the giraffe of a girl over his shoulder and snickering.

"Attention, all students!" a silky voice spoke from the speakers. The tallest girl, whose name was Kara, straightened herself in her seat, waiting for the day to end already.

"You will now receive your final report cards from your teachers! Let me remind you that if you find yourself with an 'F', then you'll be enrolled in Summer School to make it up! I do hope that we'll be seeing you all after summer! That is all."

Instantly, the classroom broke into a commotion as the haggard old math teacher started calling out names and handing students their papers.

"Kai Koimi! Kara Haven!" the old teacher waved two orange sheets of paper above his bald, wrinkly old head. "Stay after class for a moment, you two!"

Kara blinked. Why her and that runt of a boy, Kai?
Kai stopped snickering and tilted his head, then twisted back to glare at Kara confusedly, as if detecting that Kara had done something to screw them both. Kara narrowed her eyes at him for a moment, then stood to her full height and walked up to the very front of the class, taking her final report from the teacher. Kai was right behind her, and the teacher decided to tease him for his height.

"Aw, does the widdle boy want his weport cawd?" the teacher spoke in a condescending tone of voice, like talking to a pet or a little child, while waving the report card around above his head, holding it in a bony old hand. Kai glared at the old man and after pawing for it, he stopped and folded his arms, waiting.

"Hey, don't give me that attitude, young man. You are indeed in trouble." the math teacher snapped, then handed Kai his report card.
Kai huffed, then looked down at his report card, reading his grades to himself.

Kara had cracked a smile, now slinging her small-looking backpack (which she had retrieved from her desk) over one shoulder. She glanced down at Kai's grades and compared them to hers.
She got four 'A's, one 'B' in English, one 'C' in Science, and...an 'F' in Geometry. Kai's grades were solid 'B's, aside from a 'C' in History and a 'F', also in Geometry.

"Oh, shoot!" Kai grimaced, "An 'F'..."

"Same here..." Kara sighed.

"You? An 'F'?" Kai mocked astonishment, "The behemoth got an 'F'? Impossible! I thought you had more brains in that huge head of yours."
Kara glared at Kai, who copied her glare.
Kara folded her arms, "Well, my grades are way better than yours, at least."
Kai also folded his arms, mouthing her words and making disgusted faces while doing so.
Kara whacked Kai upside his head and he grinned impishly.

"Oh, stop flirting, you two!" one of the other students heading out the door teased.

"Yeah, no PDA in the classroom!" another called.
Kara and Kai both whipped around and glared, but the teasers had left already.

"I agree with them." the teacher said suddenly from behind Kara and Kai, who quickly turned and shrank away. "You two really are a Nightmare Duo."

The term, 'Nightmare Duo', was given to Kara and Kai after they had gotten into a food fight frenzy in the cafeteria. They were arguing over what the food was, sewer rat puke or chicken intestines, and suddenly food learned how to fly. No one really remembers what exactly went flying first, but after two security guards came in and broke it up, the cafeteria had to ban the two nightmares that had made ruin of the place. It took three days to clean everything up, and even after that it smelled rank.

"Anyway, what is up with your grades, you two?" the old man demanded, scowling. "You've been behaving worse and worse in class since three weeks ago!"

"I'm sorry, sir!" both Kai and Kara said at once.

"An 'I'm sorry, sir' isn't going to suddenly make your Geometry grade go any higher!" the teacher snapped.

"It's Kai's fault!" Kara exclaimed.

"What!? No it's not!!" Kai glared.

"Yes it is! You kept distracting me in class!"

Instantly, the two began arguing. Their math teacher let out an exaggerated sigh, putting his wrinkly old face in his hands.

"How can a telephone pole as tall as you notice--"

"--a bug like you?" Kara interrupted Kai's sentence with a leer.

Kai puffed up his chest in an angry huff, and was about to start yelling, but the teacher yelled over them before either of them could continue.

"ENOUGH!!"

Both Kara and Kai cringed, and immediately quieted down.

"Look, there's no way around it, you two. Either you have to do Summer School for the entire summer to make up for your grades, or fail tenth grade!"
Both Kara and Kai were shocked. Kara looked down and pressed her lips together. What would she tell her parents? They would be furious! Kai grimaced. He hated the thought of being in boring old school for another whole season. It was bad enough to be in school for spring, winter and autumn! Now summer?

"I'll be seeing you two in a few weeks. For now, enjoy what precious free time away from school you still have." their teacher said in a much quieter tone of voice. Kara and Kai mumbled, "Yes, sir..."

After that, they walked out of the classroom, both bitter and upset.

Once Kara got home, she had to confess her 'F' to her parents, who, as expected, were rather upset at her, but her punishment was not as severe as she had thought. Kara was to be grounded for five days, having to do all the house chores, then she would be free.

Once Kai got home, he confessed his 'F' to his mother (since his father was at work in Japan, not at home) and his punishment was pretty bad but not too bad. Instead of being grounded, he had to do all of the house chores for a whole week, receiving no allowance the whole time, and after that, his allowance would be smaller than normal. Apparently, Kai's mom thought that Kai would behave better in class if he had less allowance.

The two weeks went by, and neither Kai or Kara were happy. But, could you blame them? Summer School for the whole summer. How 'exciting'.
Kara had plans to hang out with her two friends, Autumn and Angel, but it seems that they won't have much time to hang, sadly. Kai was planning on going on a trip during summer with his mother and older sister, but now it seems that he won't be able to go.

Throughout the days at Summer School, the duo acted as they usually did around each other--clownish, annoying, and argumentative. However, along came a certain day where, all of a sudden, everything went completely insane.
