Chapter 6
Sapphire's Silent Communication

Everyone got up rather early in the morning, except for Kara, who was just zonked out. They all gathered in the boys' room.

"Man, you guys were real gentlemen with her," Autumn yawned after seeing Kara. Martin smiled proudly and Kai blushed a bit. Autumn grinned, "I half-expected her to be on the floor or something."

Sapph came in cautiously and looked at Kai. Kai smiled at Sapph and invited her in. Sapph looked at the unconscious Kara for a moment and then came in.
Angel observed Kara and was really proud of how well the boys' treated her. Angel gently shook Kara's shoulder and tried to wake her up.

"Kara," she said softly, "Kara..?" No response came for a moment. Then Kara stirred and blinked awake. She looked drained.

"How're you doing?" Angel asked softly.

"Pain...ow. I'm good." Kara's tone of voice was flat and tired.

Autumn joined in, "We ought to be leaving soon." Angel nodded and Kara noticed that she was all warm and cozy. She fell asleep in the couch in some other room. Now she was in a chair with a block in front of it with two pillows and her now elevated foot on top of it.

"Want some help up?" Autumn asked. Kara sat up and took her foot off of the pillows and kicked the block away with her good foot. She put both feet on the carpeted floor and reached out her good arm. Autumn took it and helped her up. Kara didn't dare try to put any wight on her injured foot and stood mostly on her good leg.

"Can you wa--" Autumn began asking but both Kara and Angel interrupted her by replying, "No." Autumn paused for a second and said quietly, "Duh. Right..."

"Well, the good news is you can stand!" Angel tried to be enthusiastic.

"The bad news is I can't really walk." Kara drowned out the optimism with a slight smile. Angel sighed, "Stop being so pessimistic..."

"...Anyway, we ought to get some of that breakfast the hotel serves and then head out!" Kai said with a smile, "I'm hungry! What about you all?"

"Good call there," Martin said quietly.

Everyone nodded and started to head out the doorway. Then Angel and Autumn stopped and turned around, realizing that they had left Kara behind.

"Forgetting someone?" Kara folded her arms, then winced because of her wound and un-folded them.

"Ugh, do we have to carry you everywhere?" Autumn grumped. Kara sat back down and let the two girls carry her out the door. Kara wanted to start saying, "Carry me, royal subjects!" but she didn't want to push it. The ride was a bit clumsy and awkward the whole way to the breakfast room.

"Okay, let's eat!" Kai rushed over, followed by Martin, to go get food. The first thing on a boy's mind is food, Kara figured as she watched the two race over to the plates like there was no tomorrow. Sapphire glanced at Kara suspiciously.

After they ate, Kara noticed that Sapphire was now only looking at her curiously. Once they made eye contact, however, Sapphire looked away and walked over to Kai and started chatting. Kara looked at Angel and Autumn to see if they saw that look, but it didn't seem like they did.

"Our boat's gonna be leaving port in...twenty minutes." Autumn said, staring at the clock. Angel was busy dumping her and Kara's food.

"It'll take us at least ten minutes to get to the pier...eh, maybe fifteen." Angel said. "So we ought to get going."

"Yeah," Autumn smiled.

Kara scooted her chair a couple of feet away from the table she was sitting at and braced herself to be carried off again. She half-wanted crutches over being carried by this time.

"Okay, guys, let's head out!" Martin called. Sapphire, Kai, and him started walking out the door.

"Ah-hem!" Angel called after them. Only Martin stopped, since the couple was busy talking.

"I could hardly carry her down here in my heels; could you please carry her with Autumn this time?" Angel asked with a smile that said, "Please??"

"No problem," Martin said blankly. Angel nodded and went ahead after Kai and Sapph.
Kara was quietly carried off.

"Attention! Passengers may now board the Island Express!" the captain of a docking boat spoke through the speakers in the walls of the shaded waiting area that the group was now at.

"Oh, hey, the Island Express is our boat!" Martin said.

"Let's get on board quickly." Angel said. Sapphire nodded and stared at Kara with suspicion.

Kara looked back. Sapphire used sign language to tell Kara that she wanted to ask her something. Kara blinked in confusion and was carried off. What did Sapph want to ask her?

Two members of the crew noticed that Kara was being carried and they gave the six a hard time about letting her on board.

"Walk on your own," one of them demanded. Angel, and Autumn exclaimed, "She can't!" and Autumn and Martin started trying to shove past the two crew members.

"I'm sorry, but we're not going to let you through here until you put her down." the other crew member said.

"Have you not seen her injured foot!?" Autumn was getting impatient now, "She stepped on a broken bottle on the beach and should most definitely not walk on it."

"Oh, why didn't you just say so? We'll let you right on in." the first crew member said enthusiastically. Martin and Autumn tried to carry Kara past the two guys again, but they stopped them.

Kara clenched her fists and shoved her ticket in one of the guys' face. "What is wrong with you guys!? I have a ticket, I am a passenger, let me on!!" she snarled.

"Not until you stop being lazy and start walking." the crew member with the ticket in his face glared.

"I'm not being lazy! I can't walk!!" Kara was now getting upset.

"You liar. We saw you just yesterday walking right off this boat without a hitch!" the second crew member folded his arms.

"Oh for Pete's sake!!!" Martin and Autumn quickly scurried inside the boat before the two crew members reacted.

"You're idiots. We're all passengers. Where's your sense of kindness or pity?" Angel looked at the two men sadly. The two crew members huffed and just ignored the group as they boarded.

About fifteen minutes later, after everyone had gotten themselves a seat, a different crew member went up to the group and took their tickets and apologized for any inconveniences.

"It's alright, but they didn't have to be so rude to our friend..." Angel said kindly.

"If she can't walk, why isn't she in a wheelchair?" the crew member that took the tickets asked.

"We don't have a wheelchair. This happened yesterday. Someone left a broken bottle on the beach and I stepped on it just hard enough for a huge chunk of it to go right into my foot." Kara explained in a rather cold and dull tone of voice. She was still very tired from the whole event.

"Oh, I'm...sorry to hear that..." the crew member walked away.

Kara was still in pain, and she felt tired and irritated.

"...So, how's your foot?" Martin asked Kara casually.

"Feels like I'm gonna have to go to a hospital when I get home. Great vacation, by the way. Thanks for bringing me along." Kara didn't mean to sound so rude and sarcastic but she couldn't help it.

"Girl, your life wants to kill you." Autumn sighed.

"Tell me something I don't know," Kara gave her friend a half-smile.

Sapph poked Kara in the shoulder (sitting right next to her) and handed her her phone. On the screen, there was a text message that read, "I need to ask you something..."
Kara typed a couple of spaces down from the message, "Yes?" and handed it back to Sapph.

Sapph typed, "...are you going to try and take Kai away from me?"

OOH! Sapph knows that Kara is jealous! The last sentence in this chapter reveals it.
What do you think Kara will say in response to Sapph's question? Please comment!

The whole island scene along with the boat ride, the Chili's, the bottle incident, the hotel, and the dumb boat people was inspired by my recent trip to Catalina Island. I came and went on a lovely boat called the Catalina Express with me, my mom, my brother, and my grandparents. (Five people in total.)

I went to Chili's not long before and/or after the trip down in LA.

I did not step on a broken bottle at the beach or run into dumb boat people but I did have my knees get scraped up from getting knocked over by restless waves and hitting rocks and the line to the boat back home was long and it took seemingly forever for the people to move because some people tried to cut themselves into line and other stuff like that.

I thought of each real-life event and put it into this story. Anything that didn't happen in each real-life event (or things that are similar) is what I think up right on the spot.

The next chapter (or so) will introduce two new characters, Randy H. and Justin Black.
Their names will be all I'm giving away for now ;)

I haven't read the past few chapters yet, but I think Kara might (if she likes Kai) pretend like nothing's wrong ^_^ And that would lead to Sapph being extra suspicious about the whole situation.
